Enjoyment with an extra dose of sustainability

Get to know our corn supplier and find out what makes our Armour corn so sustainable
"Smart Farming" - a passion project of our maize producer Armour
Whether in salads, on the grill or as a raclette garnish - sweetcorn in all its variations is popular with the Swiss. But did you know that only 1% of the corn grown in Switzerland is sweet corn? In fact, 99% of the corn that is grown is exclusively used for feed maize (Schweizerbauer, 2020).
In Thailand, however, sweetcorn is an important export commodity - and so are our Armour corn kernels. The sensational climatic conditions in Thailand enable a year-round high-quality harvest.  We will explain to you why you are contributing significantly to the environment and society in Thailand by consuming Armour corn.

Where our Armour corn starts its journey

Armour corn is produced by the traditional family business Sunsweet Public Co, Ltd ("Sunsweet") under the direction of Mr. Ongart Kittikhunchai in Thailand. The innovative production technology and the high-quality standard are the main reasons why Sunsweet is one of the world leaders in corn production. However, the Smart Farming Program for corn farmers is also an indispensable driver of success - a passion project that was launched by Mr. Kittikhunchai in 2012 and already has more than 20’000 participants today.
The aim of the project is to support the participating farmers at all production levels and to create shared value - with a particular focus on promoting sustainability.

Smart farming: added value for the environment and society with shared knowledge

Participants benefit in many ways from Sunsweet's in-depth know-how and are supported in all possible sub-processes of production; be it soil nutrient analysis, cultivation techniques to increase the yield per m2 or regulating optimal water consumption to ensure a sustainable irrigation system. In addition, Sunsweet organizes regular trainings and updating sessions on important topics such as accounting, production planning and environmentally friendly use of resources.
The amount of corn harvested is regulated by quantity agreements. This reduces unnecessary operating costs for farmers and ensures corn quality in the long term. And at the same time, Mother Nature is happy about the avoidance of food waste.
And while we're on the subject: In addition to strict compliance with ISO 14001* requirements, Sunsweet demonstrates a remarkable commitment. For example, the corn by-products that are not used directly for production are completely recycled as animal feed. In addition, wastewater from production is converted into biogas to generate renewable energy for heating and electricity for the factory.
As part of Smart Farming, farmers undertake to pursue agreed sustainability goals with the support of Sunsweet and to meet the requirements associated with them. Successful implementation means that farmers benefit from additional income or reduced operating costs.
The development of a stable and long-term relationship between Sunsweet and the farmers because of Smart Farming should not be underestimated. In this way, foundations are laid for continuous quality optimization and the fulfillment of a comprehensive sustainability policy. Finally, there is an extremely important side effect - the improvement in the standard of living of many farming families.
Smart farming - added value for the environment and society. It is no coincidence that CEO Ongart Kittikhunchai is the proud recipient of the 2019 Export Award, which was presented by the Thai Prime Minister.
